Happy Valentine's Day!  It is a phrase which is communicated world wide today.  As you research effective communication this week do you think this phrase is similiar to communication in the healthcare field?  Please explain why or why not.

  1. It is a pat statement. We hear it but unless there is some form of non verbal communication or emotional attachment conveyed with it there is little meaning. When we communicate with clients we need to consider what we are going to say and what we look like saying it.
I have worked with a nurse who refused to consider her body language or tone and many clients and families reported her. Others could give the same information and create distress but the family believed the nurse cared. Communication is largely tone, body language and consistancy.

  2. Happy Valentine's Day communicates a greeting, but with a little more. My patients always smile and it prompts a conversation as I complete a head-to-toe assessment whether I say, Happy Valentines Day, Happy St Patrick's Day, etc. It opens doors for the patient to express concerns or ask questions. ~Debbie
